HER 2086 - The Friary Mansion (circa 1615 -1818), Guildford
John Murray (later Earl of Annandale) built a mansion on the site of the Dominican Friary (HER 1658) at some time between 1608 and 1620. The style was later to be considered that of Inigo Jones (though almost certainly not his work) and watercolour drawings of the building are in Guildford Museum">Guildford Museum. It remained in private hands (and was occasionally used for public meetings) until 1794 when it was converted to Officer's quarters, with barracks in the grounds. In 1818 the house was pulled down. The site is now occupied by the Friary Centre, a shopping precinct. Excavations on the site (see HER 1658) showed that the mansion was partially superimposed on the north, east and west. West Ranges of the Dominican Priory.
