HER 2113 - Middle Bronze Age Ferrule, Chertsey
Middle Bronze Age (1200-1100 BC) ferrule with wood still surviving in the socket found in the area of Mixnam's Pit East gravel pit (see HER 2403) June 1981. A worker noticed pockets of black clay/mud in this area but was uncertain whether these deposits had taken a linear course. However, a second worker remembered noticing such a linear formation running north-south through the southern part of the gravel pit, suggesting an old river channel. The existence of such a channel might account for the disparity between the course of the Thames and the line of the County Boundary at this point. Note: a bronze sword found nearby (HER 798)
