HER 2284 - Settlement 6Th - 12Th Century
Excavations in 1967 and 1973 revealed a settlement of the 6th to 12th centuries. Evidence included a scatter of earlier Saxon pottery and a sunken featured building of 8th or 9th century late, together with an associated ditch system; to the south-east evidence for rectangular timber buildings of 11th to 12th century late was found. The excavator considered the site to be associated with the Upper West Field cemetery but this has not been relocated (see HER 549). See also HER 2282, 2283 and 2285.
