HER 2395 - Early - Middle Iron Age site, Thorpe
An Iron Age occupation site at Mixnam's pit, Penton Hook, Thorpe excavated by W F Grimes in 1944-45. The main settlement was found to be Early to Middle Iron Age (“A”, extending through the “AB” phase. The area was destroyed by gravel digging and the pit is now waterfilled and partly used as a tip. The bulk of the 1944-45 finds are with the Institute of Archaeology. Some of the pottery is in store at Guildford Museum">Guildford Museum, and on display is an Iron Age “A” bowl, presented by S S Frere. (Acc no: S 3716). Weybridge Museum have on display a large selection of Iron Age to Romano-British (2nd century BC to 1st century AD) pottery sherds (Acc no: 97, 1965). Neolithic and Romano-British material also found (see HER 585 and 2396).
