HER 2396 - Romano-British (1st - 4th Century) settlement
Romano-British village at Mixnam's Pit, Penton Hook, Thorpe excavated by W F Grimes in 1944-45. A rectangular Romano-British enclosure, post-holes of huts, shallow storage pits and ditches were revealed, as well as Neolithic and Iron Age material (see HER 585 and 2395). Roman occupation was 1st century, possibly continuous to the 4th century. The area was destroyed by gravel digging and the pit is now waterfilled and partly used as a tip. The bulk of the 1944-45 finds are with the Institute of Archaeology. Some of the pottery is in store at Guildford Museum">Guildford Museum, and on display is an Iron Age “A” bowl, presented by S S Frere. (Acc no: S 3716). Weybridge Museum have on display a large selection of Iron Age to Romano-British (2nd century BC to 1st century AD) pottery sherds (Acc no: 97, 1965).
