HER 2403 - Viking Sword, Mixam's gravel pit
Viking sword found in same general area of the Mixnam's gravel pit as HER 2113 in June 1981. Pockets of black clay/mud were noticed in this area, possibly suggesting an old river channel. The existence of such a channel might account for the disparity between the course of the Thames and the line of the Surrey county boundary at this point. The sword is 10th century iron, with swordsmith's name "Ulfberht" damascened along the blade, between two crosses. Fullered blade, containing steel, tri-lobed pommel, blade and lower guard inlaid with silver and copper wire. Traces of hilt material suggest it was of horn. In Chertsey Museum. S-type sword.
