HER 2423 - Romano-British Site, Petters Sports Field
Petters Sports Field. Excavations by Bernard Johnson and David Barker from 1972 and by Martin O'Connell from 1976-1977. Evidence for occupation in the Middle Bronze Age, Late Bronze Age, Romano-British and medieval periods. Most features were confined to gravel. Two parallel enclosure ditches of Roman period. The larger had a v-shape profile and may have served as a palisade trench, but no surviving evidence of timber posts. Finds were limited, but indicated a date in the second half of 1st century AD. Only one feature within the area enclosed by the ditch was dateable to the Roman period. The small part of a Roman roadside ditch was also excavated, which cut northern section of late Bronze Age ditch and contained coin of Constantine I. The dateable material obtained suggested that this ditch was already becoming infilled in the 4th century. See HER 799, 2424, 2425 and 4301. The discovery of a fragment of a Roman military harness mount in the ultimate fill of the palisade ditch indicates a military presence within the surrounding area but is insufficient evidence for ascribing a military function to the feature. Finds in the British Museum, with others in Guildford Museum. Later excavation in advance of redevelopment revealed a continuation of the multi-period site. A few sherds of Romano-British pottery were researched from a buried river channel. The previously postulated Romano-British road could not be located and the evidence suggests that it had not existed. A Romano-British ditch was found, probably a continuation from one previously known: there was Saxon pottery in its upper fill
