HER 2425 - Early medieval Site, Petters Sports Field
Petters Sports Field. Excavations by Bernard Johnson and David Barker from 1972 and by Martin O'Connell from 1976-1977. Evidence for occupation in middle Bronze Age, late Bronze Age, Romano-British and Medieval periods. Most features confined to gravel. A 11/12th century AD building was uncovered. A medieval section of an enclosure ditch contained 12th century pottery and bone, excavated at northern end of site. The area of the enclosure was not available for excavation. Pottery from fill of ditch, previously thought to be medieval is in fact late Saxon. The ditch itself could be Roman or post-Roman. See HER 2423, 2424, 799.
