HER 2645 - Neolithic site, Runnymede Bridge
Scheduled Monument
Runnymede Bridge, Egham. Neolithic material has been uncovered at various times between 1959 and 1984. In 1959-60 during the construction of the A30 bridge, Neolithic pottery was found together with large quantities of bone and antler, flint implements and burnt flint.
During salvage excavation of the Late Bronze Age settlement at Runnymede (HER 2307) in 1978, Middle Neolithic pottery, flint and two polished axes found about two metres below the level of Late Bronze Age occupation. The finds were tentatively associated with a laid brushwood platform but unfortunately no further structural evidence was encountered in the controlled excavation that followed, although Neolithic artefactual material was identified.
Neolithic levels were again found during rescue excavations in 1980 in advance of M25 construction work to the west of the bridge. A midden deposit was identified which contained Neolithic pottery, other occupational debris and fragments of human bone. A number of small pits and possible postholes also found.
