HER 2725 - Medieval undercroft

Scheduled Monument
A late 13th century undercroft underlies 72/74 High Street Guildford (an early 19th century building). Architectural features included an entrance for High Street, now removed and an internal access in the south wall (blocked and replace by a 19th century access). The columns with capitals decorated with grotesque heads, and stone rib vaulting generally survive in good condition. The undercroft would originally have been used as shop premise, and from the end of the 14th century as storage space. Scheduled Monument, Surrey no. 166 (see also HER 2726 and 2727). The undercroft underlies nos. 72,74 76 and 78 High Street. Listed Building Grade II*.
