HER 2745 - Probable Roman villa site, Binscombe
Excavation by Surrey Archaeological Society in 1971 at Binscombe Site 3, Binscombe Lane, as an emergency operation after builders had revealed ironstone tesserae. Occupation from the early 1st century to 4th century was found, covering three successive phases. Phase 3 was represented by two rooms, one containing the skeleton of a small horse covered by stones. Finds include opus signinum, tegulae, ironstone tesserae, terracotta tesserae, fragments of roof tile and pottery including samian. Possible corridor villa. The site appears to have been enclosed by a ditch and bank with a fence also in phase 3. See also HER 2746 and 2747. Archive and finds are in Guildford Museum">Guildford Museum. See HER 1635 and 1636 for related Roman material at Binscombe (site 1 and 2). An ironstone tesserae from the villa site is in Godalming Museum.
