HER 2849 - Iron Age sword and pot, Charlton Pit, Shepperton (Shepperton Ranges).
An Iron Age pot and a La Tene type sword were found circa 1985 during gravel raising at Charlton Pit, Shepperton (Shepperton Ranges). The Iron Age pot is hard formed, orange clay with grit inclusions the exterior surface is coloured black. It is a La Tene type sword: iron, double-edged blade with upper and lower bronze scabbard mounts intact. Upper mount is decorated on upper surface with repousse work of asymmetrical loops and swirls. Edge of mount is cut to a similar pattern. The rear of mount incorporates iron belt loop; the lower mount is also decorated with repousse work of different character. Cast bronze chape. The tang survives but without evidence of the original grip. Both objects are in Chertsey Museum">Chertsey Museum. See HER 2850, 2851 and 2852 for other objects from this immediate area.
