HER 2850 - Late Bronze Age hafted axe, Charlton gravel pit, Shepperton (Shepperton Ranges).
A Late Bronze Age socketed axe found during gravel raising at Charlton gravel pit, Shepperton (Shepperton Ranges). The axe is bronze, socketed of late type, with a loop. It is complete with jointed wooden haft, intact when discovered, broken into four sections by find. The upper section of haft is connected to the axe head approximately 200mm long, roughly squared cross-section between 40mm and 30mm wide. Main haft is joined by means of circular joint, forming a handle circa 275mm long. Tool marks are visible on wood. The upper haft is of oak while the main haft is ash. The axe is in Chertsey Museum">Chertsey Museum. See HER 2849, 2851 and 2852 for other material found in the immediate area.
