HER 2886 - Post Medieval occupation and burials: Friends’ Burial Ground, Staines
Friends’ Burial Ground, Staines was first excavated circa 1971. Post-medieval pits containing pottery of 18th to 19th century excavated in 1975-76, during investigation of Roman and medieval Staines (HER 807 and 2869). In the 19th century the site belonged to the Society of Friends (Quakers). The foundations of the eastern wall of the Friends' Meeting House, constructed 1843/44, lay along the western side of the site. Thirty-four graves were excavated of which 31 were brick-lined and had been used for up to four burials, one upon the other, separated by a flagstone floor.
