HER 2907 - Roman road, pottery and timber buildings; Barclays Bank, 69-71 High Street, Staines
Archaeological excavation during redevelopment of Barclay’s Bank, High Street, Staines in 1969 revealed the following features: 1. Roman Road running east/west (3.453m wide) cambered with side ditches. 2. Road sealed below a thin layer of mud followed by a burnt layer, succeeded by 3. Two superimposed timber buildings. Building 1 dated circa AD70 and Building 2 circa AD 130-150 4. Imported pottery circa AD40-60 also found as well as a number of military objects including a cheek piece from a cavalry helmet circa AD60 5. Black soil sealed 1 to 4 and contained 3rd-4th century material. 6. The black soil was itself cut by a pit/ditch containing 12th-13th century pottery.
