HER 323 - Shalford Mill, Shalford
Shalford Mill, a disused 18th Century Corn Mill on earlier mill site. This is a four storey timber-framed water-mill, complete with its machinery. The mill is brick built to the first floor, then timber-framed above, with hung tiles at the front of the mill and weatherboarding at the rear. The iron-framed waterwheel is internally mounted, is of the low breastshot variety, and measures 13ft 6in in diameter by 7ft 6in wide. On the other side of a brick partition wall from the waterwheel is a 9ft 6in diameter iron pit wheel with wooden cogs. The wooden upright shaft drives a spur wheel 9ft in diameter and constructed in wood. Only one pair of the original three pairs of stones remains complete, while only the bedstones remain of the other two. The third floor contains other ancillary machinery such as wire machines, oat crushers and the sack hoist. The present mill was built in 1753. Milling ceased in 1914, after which it fell into disrepair. The mill was saved and given to the National Trust in 1932 by a group known as "Ferguson's Gang". The present building replaced an existing mill; a mill in the manor of East Shalford is mentioned as early as 1332.
