HER 3253 - Mesolithic Flints, including a Tranchet Axe, Core Axes and Flakes

As a result of the 1987 excavations of the medieval manor site of Preston Hawe (HER 922), a number of flint artefacts, mostly of Mesolithic date including a tranchet axe were recovered in later features. 18 pieces of prehistoric flint were recovered during the excavations, the majority from medieval and later contexts. The assemblage comprised one boldly flaked tranchet core axe/adze, 2 fragments of separate core axes, 1 flake knife, 1 blade core graver, 2 much-shattered and broken core tools (picks?), 2 plunging blades and 2 distal ends of blades or narrow flakes. The remaining seven pieces are all flakes, one of which has been notched, while another has been retouched along the ventral side of one lateral edge. A good proportion of the collection- comprising the three core axes/adzes, the core graver, the blades and the blade/flake fragments is Mesolithic in character. The two shattered and broken possible picks together with the flake knife and the majority of flakes, meanwhile, are not susceptible of close dating, and could as easily belong to the Neolithic period as the Mesolithic.
