HER 3304 - Abinger Mill, formerly Elwix Mill
A gunpowder mill on the Tillingbourne, first mentioned in 1595 when it was leased to a George Bromwell. The initial manufacturer of powder here was probably Richard Hill, a lord of the manor of Abinger and a partner of George Evelyn in powder-making. The "powder bay" at Elwix mill is mentioned in 1622, so powder-making must still have been taking place, or only recently ended. In the same year the site was partly converted to a copper mill and a deed of 1667 describes it as "one corn mill and the other now, or lately, a copper mill, heretofore a powder mill". References state that the mill dates back to the end of the 11th century and was utilised for various industrial purposes. There is a drawing of the Mill House in the Victoria County History for Surrey (1911), but the mill itself is not mentioned, so presumably it had been demolished by that date. The brickwork and masonry of the dam and part of the wheel-well were still visible circa 1951. The Mill House survives and is now listed Grade II.
