HER 3379 - Bramley Mill, Watermill
Bramley Mill, Mill Lane, Bramley. A late 17th century mill, now a private house. Last used in 1935. Built of bargate stone and brick with a slate roof and with a Sun Insurance plaque. Also has an octagonal brick dovecote, a relic of the days when the miller had to provide the Lord of the Manor with doves. In 1295 Gilbert le Colvene, of Hednescumbe, granted a lease for life to Joan Karrington for a messuage including a fulling mill. The first reference to a corn mill appears in 1687. It was a three pair mill capable of producing 55 sacks of flour per week; the high output could be a result of the extensive size of the millpond. The mill was converted to a house in 1935 and the machinery was then removed for scrap. The mill, mill house and millpond still survive.
