HER 3706 - Munstead Wood Grade I EH Registered Park of Special Historic Interest

Gertrude Jekyll's own garden, laid out from 1896. The house was designed for Jekyll by Lutyens. A formal court on the north side of the house was designed as a shady sitting place. Steps lead down past two pools surrounded by ferns. Jekyll's nut walk and flanking borders were replaced by lawns in the 1950s into which a swimming pool was constructed in 1966. Lawns to the south of the house lead to a woodland garden, with four areas of planting: silver birch/holly, beech, Scots pine, Spanish chestnut. Each area originally had different shrub and flower underplanting. Some areas are now in separate ownership including the Hut, 1894-5, by Lutyens, set in a June garden. Also the site of the hidden garden, enclosed by unclipped yew, holly and ilex. Munstead Orchard, gardener's cottage, 1898-99, by Lutyens, together with the Thunder House (a triangular belvedere) dated 1895 and set at the corner of the kitchen garden and the quadrangle.
