HER 3712 - Savill Garden and Valley Gardens Grade I EH Registered Park of Special Historic Interest

Landscaped wild and woodland gardens of about 14 hectares, created between 1932-39 by Sir Eric Savill and extended circa 1950 and 1977. Originally there was a small area of moist woodland garden adjoining Parkside Tree Nursery, known as the Bog Garden. In 1951 George VI named the gardens in honour of Sir Eric Savill. Upper Pond was created and Lower Pond extended following development of the first area of garden. The whole garden consists of woodland with many grassy areas and glades linked by winding paths. There is a wide range of specimen trees and shrubs, in many places under planted with primulas, meconopsis, hostas and ferns. There is a unique moss garden near the Upper Pond. A formal area backed by a south-facing brick wall built about 1947 has raised Alpine beds. Large herbaceous borders enclosed by formal cypress hedges complete the area. Recent developments include an area of autumn colour, named Jubilee Garden, linked by a bridge designed by Sir Hugh Casson. There is a Dry Garden created circa 1977. The layout is linked visually to existing features in Windsor Great Park, in particular there is a ride view to the Obelisk commemorating the Duke of Cumberland. This site is part of the Royal Estate, Windsor, together with the following six related park or garden areas which are given separate entries within the EH register: in Berkshire, Windsor Great Park (within which The Savill Garden and Valley Gardens lie), Frogmore Gardens, Windsor Castle and Home Park, Cumberland Lodge, Royal Lodge; in Surrey, Virginia Water.
