HER 3819 - Spelthorne Moot, possibly on Ashford Common
The site of the meeting place of Spelthorne hundred has been suggested as a place on Ashford Common, as a field called Spelthorne Pasture is shown on the Ashford Award map of 1811. The meeting place of Spelthorne may have been near Ashford, since in 1819 the road which leads from Ashford to Kempton Park was named Spelthorne Lane. This was stated in the Middlesex volume of the place name society. A footnote also states that the names Spelthorne Cottage and Spelthorne Grove appear close to this road (now the Staines Road) on the modern map, but are not on that of 1862-70. Therefore, it is suggested that the Spelthorne hundred met on Ashford Common, giving rise to the road name Spelthorne Lane, from which Spelthorne Grove and Cottage later took their names.
