HER 4001 - Dene Hole: Crewes Avenue, Warlingham
A cavity was found at Crewes Avenue, Warlingham, when a new soakaway for a house was being dug in September 1951. It was found at a depth of 8.5 metres and was surveyed by Caterham and Warlingham Urban District Council. It was described in the Chelsea Spelological Society Records as a chamber of 17.5 ft long and 13 ft high, with an offshoot 111 ft long and 7 ft high. The floor of the site was covered by several feet of clay and the chamber, which is thought to be a Neolithic flint mine, seemed to have originally been entered via a shaft at one end. The full depth of the feature was 13 metres which is comparable to many Kent dene holes.
