HER 4466 - Excavation at Kingston Rotunda in advance of redevelopment
Excavation in advance of redevelopment at the Kingston Rotunda site (aka Bentall's Depository or Old Bus Station) conducted by Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd during 2000. Prehistoric to Post-medieval deposits and artefacts were discovered. From this excavation It appears that Saxo-Norman occupation of Kingston may have extended further east than was previously shown by the Eden Street excavations. Evidence of this is the discovery of Early Medieval Sandy Ware (circa 900-1050 AD) in rubbish pits, which may imply domestic structures had lined the road, with the rear of these plots stretching to the extreme of the Bentall's site. Evidence of early medieval pottery production was also apparent in the form of pits cut into the natural sand, containing pottery wasters and the presence of kiln furniture. The pottery wasters were identified as South Hertfordshire Grey Ware, dated circa 1140-1300 AD. These features suggest the presence of nearby kilns and manufacturing centres in the vicinity.
