HER 461 - Horsell Common East and West Bell Barrows

Scheduled Monument
Horsell Common East and West are two fine examples of bell barrows. The antiquarian Aubrey visited the site in 1718 and commented:
"On the heath in this Parish are two round Hills or Barrows, supposed to have been the Burial-Place for Men slain in Battles."
Both barrows have been damaged, with obvious traces of antiquarian and treasure hunting activity in the centre of the two barrows.
Grinsell recorded that the West bell barrow as a very fine example. The mound measures 99 feet in diameter, and is 5 foot high. It has a ditch surrounding it which is 8 feet wide and 1 foot deep. The berm, or raised linear bank separating the ditch from the bank, is 21 feet wide.
The bell barrow to the East is slightly smaller, and covered with trees. The mound is built up to a similar height, but its diameter is only about 80 feet. The ditch surrounding it is about 2 feet deep and 9 feet wide.
