HER 474 - St Nicholas Church, Pyrford

The church as built in around 1140 AD, with massive Norman walls constructed of conglomerate. There are three consecration crosses on the walls of the church, on the north and south walls of the chancel and on the west wall of the nave. The building contains some 12th and 13th century windows. The nave was refitted in the fifteenth century with new windows and new pews. The roofs of the chancel and nave were also probably renewed at this time. The porch dates to the 16th century. The church was restored in 1967. Fragments of an unusually early Norman Fresco of about 1140AD were found in the church during this restoration. Under the supervision of Dr Eve Baker, a mural was uncovered which it then became apparent was a painting of about 1200AD superimposed on the older fresco.
