HER 507 - Sutton Place
Sutton Place was built circa 1523 in the form of a square with central courtyard. The north side was destroyed by fire in 1560. The place, now rectangular in form, is one of the finest examples of terra-cotta and brick mansions in England. It is a Grade I listed building. Excavation by Dr David Bird for Surrey County Council and SyAS of part of the foundations of the gatehouse wing demolished in the late 18th century, confirmed the accuracy of Harrison's plan of 1891. Fieldwork nearby in advance of lake construction revealed the line of a former drive which at some time had utilised rubble from the house, perhaps from the demolished wing.
