HER 51 - Abinger Motte, Abinger
Scheduled Monument
Moated motte (15ft high and 18-120ft in diameter) at Abinger Manor excavated by Hope-Taylor in 1949. Pottery and post-holes showed two main phases of occupation at the site. Phase 1 (circa 1100 AD): a structure was built on top of the motte, probably enclosed by a bailey of which there is now no trace. Phase 2 (before the middle of the 12th century): the mound top was remodelled and a palisade erected round the top of the motte, enclosing a square tower. Late 13th century pottery was also found on the site.
