HER 519 - Clandon House or Park (1713-1729)

Clandon Park (Grade I). A half 'H' shaped house built 1713-29 in the Jacobean style for the Onslows, on the site of a building which was probably a Royal hunting lodge in the 12th century. However, although a medieval manor house almost certainly would have existed on the site, there appears to be no positive evidence concerning the existence of a Royal hunting lodge. Clandon house, a large private residence, as described above and in excellent condition. Regularly open to the general public. In the care of the National Trust.

DescriptionAn archaeological watching brief was carried out at Clandon Park, West Clandon, Surrey in March 2003 as a response to investigative groundworks at the National Trust Property, in advance of the installation of a ‘six man’ lift. The work was commissioned as there has been ‘little or no opportunity for archaeological intervention and recording at Clandon to date, although there is anecdotal evidence pointing to an earlier structure on the same site as the present house’. The aim of the current investigation was to check whether archaeological evidence would be revealed that might help guide further work both in relation to the forthcoming development and subsequent groundworks at Clandon Park. Research to date indicates that an earlier property was evident prior to the existing 18th century house, although their precise location in relation to each other is unclear.
