HER 5346 - Early Bronze Age Ring ditch and inhumations - possibly originally surounding a barrow
Ring ditch of probable Early Bronze Age date discovered during work in autumn 2001 by SCAU at a gravel quarry at the edge of the village. The ring ditch has a diameter of c.30 metres and appears to be the remains of a round barrow that was probably ploughed away during antiquity. Two crouched inhumations were discovered in the basal fill of the ditch on the north east side of the barrow, which probably date to the same period. No grave goods accompanied the burials. The fill of the ring ditch produced a variety of finds including Early to Middle Bronze Age pottery and Late Neolithic and Bronze Age flintwork. Evidence of a Roman field system (part of which cut across the ring ditch and Roman and Saxon pits, were also uncovered.
