HER 5976 - Greenlawn Memorial Park

Designed as a lawn cemetery, Greenlawns was managed by Greenlawn Memorial Park Limited, part of Memorial Park Syndicate and was opened in 1938. The cemetery covered 9 acres with the provision of 930 plots. Various restrictive covenants were put in place to control the operation of the cemetery. In 1948 the cemetery came into the ownership of Croydon Borough Council and there was an abortive attempt to enlarge the site onto adjoining arable land. The roughly T shaped level site is enclosed by hedgerows. A footpath, a right of way belonging to Croydon Council, runs along the eastern boundary. A plain brick lodge and office building (circa 1938), forming an arch over the entrance and set back a little from the road, guard the entrance in Chelsham Road. The appearance of the cemetery is of an open lawn with flowerbeds; gravestones are not permitted. There is a Rest Park for up to four urns of cremated remains per plot and an area known as Sanctum Vaults where urns may be interred in a sealed chamber below ground level. Together they comprise approximately 1/16 of the site. There is an area reserved for Muslim burials.
