HER 6923 - Neolithic flints and features: Brooklands Racetrack

Evaluation and watching brief by Oxford Archaeology as part of a programme of investigation in advance of and during the proposed redevelopment of part of the interior of the Scheduled Monument. Most of the area evaluated had been previously truncated and levelled, but two Late medieval or Early Post-medieval ditches and an associated pit and gully, two large undated linear features (either ditches or possible former channels of the nearby River Wey), and two possible Prehistoric ditches, were revealed. The watching brief revealed several curvilinear features with associated Mesolithic or Neolithic worked flints, although the majority of the observed features and deposits were probably of natural origin.

Oxford Archaeology carried out a ‘strip and record’ watching brief at Brooklands, Weybridge, Surrey on behalf of Daimler Chrysler UK Limited between September and November 2004. The watching brief covered the stripping of a central driving circuit, additional parking areas for the Brooklands Museum and the removed of former car parking areas within the driving circuit area. Several curvilinear features with associated Mesolithic or Neolithic worked flints were found within the north-west and north-east areas of the stripped driving circuit, although the majority of observed features and deposits were probably of natural origin. No other archaeological features were found. Description An archaeological evaluation report, phase 1. Oxford Archaeology carried out a field evaluation at Brooklands, Weybridge, Surrey on behalf of Daimler Chrysler UK Limited. The evaluation revealed that the present day landsurface had been made-up with dumps of redeposited natural silt, sand and debris over much of the area explored by the evaluation. This had taken place subsequent to the substantial truncation of the natural geological deposits and as a result the potential for the survival of archaeological deposits is very low across most of the evaluated area. Where the geology was relatively untruncated (the north-east of Site 7 and Trench 27 Site 8), only one potential feature was identified and one find was retrieved. As the feature (ditch 1800 in Trench 18) was undated and the find (a Mesolithic worked flint projectile point in Trench 27), was residual and not in situ the archaeological potential of these areas remains low.
