HER 6986 - Upper Palaeolithic flints: Wey Manor Farm Phase 7 and 8 areas
Archaeological evaluation and excavation by SCAU on the phase 7 and 8 area of this ongoing minerals extraction site. The evaluation produced evidence of a field system of predominately Post-medieval date, as well as a number of ditches of uncertain and probably various dates. Three areas revealed features which contained material indicative of Prehistoric and Saxon dates. Further excavation of the phase 7 area revealed further non-structural Saxon features, as well as a discrete area containing a scatter of struck flints.
The area contained nearly 400 pristine and unpatinated flints lying in-situ within the matrix of a river/clay deposit, and dating to the Late Upper Palaeolithic period. The area was carefully excavated, each flint being individually plotted and numbered and retrieved. The complete assemblage included examples of long blades, smaller blades, bladelets, and flakes, with some pieces retouched to provide backed points, scrapers and a burin, as well as miscellaneous debitage from working practices. Post-excavation analyses of the material is ongoing, but the site may be one of less than a handful of this period in the country to be found in such a riverine context rather than a cave environment.

| Description | Thirty four trial trenches were excavated at Wey Manor Farm, Addlestone for Phases 7 and 8 in advance of minerial extraction. The evaluation revealed elements of a field system predominantly of post-medieval date, as well as a number of ditches of uncertain and probably various dates. Three areas revealed finds and features indicative of settlement of prehistoric and Saxon date. It has been recommended that these three areas are to be subject to further archaeological work in the form of a controlled strip and watching brief. |

| Description | An evaluation at Wey Manor Farm, Addlestone within Phase 7 & 8 of the quarry, in advance of mineral extraction, suggested that three areas required further work in the form of a controlled strip and watching brief. This revealed finds and features indicative of settlement of prehistoric and Saxon date. The principal prehistoric feature was a substantial ditch of Iron Age date that crossed the area from north-west to south-east, while the Early Saxon features indicated a small settlement, although there were no definite structures. The most important discovery, however, was of a flint scatter (almost 400 items) of a long blade industry of Cresswellian type (around 11000 BC), a unique discovery in the region and of national importance. |
