HER 699 - 16th - 17th century glasshouse site, Alfold
A glasshouse in Sydney Wood, Alfold, was excavated by Winbolt in 1930-31. It produced mainly fine quality vessel-glass, showing a Venetian influence exerted after 1550 and probably earlier. Both wood and coal were used indicating a period before and after the wood embargo of 1615. Speed's map of 1610 features the site, suggesting a continuance well into the 17th century. The glasshouse pond is about 30 yards along and to the left of the track which runs north-west from Sydney Farm Lodge. The furnace is a further 20 yards on, and thirty yards inside Glasshouse copse to the right. Foundation bricks indicate a structure some 30-40ft long and 15-20 ft wide. The glasshouse pond (which still holds water) is shown on the OS 25" at TQ 0207 3383. Probing the ground in an area of small pits some 30m north-west of the pond produced a mass of roofing tile, brick and stone fragments, also brick and fired clay with glass adhering (area centred TQ 0206 3386). On display from this site in Guildford Museum are a small crucible and fragments of glass.
