HER 717 - St George's Hill Iron Age Hillfort, Elmbridge
Scheduled Monument
A univallate hill fort but with triple defences on the north-west and an outwork on the north-west sections were cut through the defences circa 1911.
Pottery, Iron Age "A" and "C" and Belgic ware, also iron slag, found when two houses were built in the south-west sector, is in Guildford Museum">Guildford Museum.
Badly mutilated in places. Two recent disturbances have occurred. In 1972 foundation trenches for new house opposite “Hevesta” in Camp End Road were dug, but no structures seen. An Electricity Board trench was constructed in 1973 through ramparts in grounds of Tor Point at the south end of fort, which found a possible second ditch.
Excavations in September 1981 in the grounds of Ravens Point were undertaken prior to construction work. A section was dug through the defences which showed that they were originally placed near the top of the natural slope, and rebuilt after their collapse. A small excavation in the interior of the fort revealed no structural evidence or finds.
