HER 774 - Earlier Neolithic Causewayed Enclosure, Staines

Causewayed camp. Excavated in 1961-3 by R Robertson-Mackay after its discovery as markings on an aerial photograph. The concentric causewayed ditches had inner banks which had been ploughed flat. The ditches, flat bottomed, averaged 4.5-5.5 ft deep and 8.5-13 ft wide. A large complex of single pot hole, pits and palisade trenches was found within the interior and all contained fragments of Windmill Hill pot sherds and flints. Secondary Neolithic Peterborough pottery was only found in one section of the outer ditch. A single flat oval grave found in the interior contained an unaccompanied contracted inhumation burial. The finds included leaf arrowheads, polished axes, stone axes, saddle querns and an hourglass macehead. Romano-British occupation of the 1st century overlay the whole site. See HER 2412 for Beaker occupation in the area and 2413 for Roman occupation in the area.
