HER 7766 - PARISH CHURCH OF ST MARY THE VIRGIN, London Road, Ewell

1847-8. Architect Henry Clutton. Built by Sir George Glyn, at once patron and incumbent of the living. Hammerdressed stone, with ashlar dressings. Pitched tile roofs. Nave, 2 aisles of unequal width, chancel, north chancel aisle, vestry to south of chancel, tower to west of north aisle decorated with pinnacles and gargoyles, and porches to west and south. 5 bay nave, west bay taken up by gallery, which also extends across south aisle. Double chamfered pointed arcade on alternating cylindrical and octagonal piers. Open timber roof with 2 flat-topped dormers each of 3 cusped lights, let into each side. Aisle windows, and east and west windows all have bar tracery. Contemporary furnishings include wooden pews, elaborate marble and alabaster pulpit with brass rail, delicate iron heating grilles in floor, red and black diamond-shaped tiles. Evangelists and Last Supper in tile on east chancel wall, stained glass in east and west windows, and organ of 1865 (by Father Willis). From old church come 15th century chancel screen with delicate ogival tracery, cusped, and trefoils in spandrels, 15th century font with panelled quatrefoil decoration, altar table, brasses and funerary monuments of 18th century and 19th century, of which best are to Sir William Lewen (died 1721), Lord Mayor of London (1717) and patron of the living, and to Mrs Halifax (died 1795) by Banks. The interior of the Church has been damaged by fire since it's inspection for listing. Listing NGR: TQ2203462895
