HER 897 - Earthwork, possibly a medieval stock enclosure

Feature described as “a squatter's enclosure on Banstead Heath, above the tunnel, was done away with when the railway was being made in 1898-99”. This refers to three square earthworks on the heath (HER 902, 2495 and 2496) as “pieces of land taken in at sometime by squatters, or made by those who had common rights for housing cattle at night” (H.E. Malden), and the above enclosure is another of these probable medieval stock or animal pounds. Field investigations in 1965 made no further observations and could gain no further information.
