HER 9740 - RUINS OF BETCHWORTH CASTLE, Betchworth Park, Betchworth

Ruins of a mansion built by Sir Thomas Browne in 1449, and to which alterations were later made e.g. in 1705 and 1799 by Soane. Stables and a dairy were also built according to Soane's design at about the same date: see Castle Gardens, Betchworth Park (SMR 9203). Demolished 1819. Stone rubble, ashlar and red brick. Remains of garden terrace wall below. Listing NGR: TQ1902950065
