HER 979 - 1st - 4th Century Roman Villa, Walton-On-The-Hill
A Roman villa on Walton Heath was first discovered circa 1772 and was subsequently excavated in 1856, 1882, and 1948. Tesselated pavements, remains of a hypocaust, and a probable corridor were found. The villa may have been enclosed by a ditch. Pottery, including Claudian, dates the site from mid-1st to 4th century. For field system possibly associated with the villa see HER 980.
