HER 982 - Undated Enclosureand site of Romano-British and medieval pottery, Banstead

During the Second World War, photographs revealed (as crop marks) a fifth of these rectangular enclosures (HER 2494, 2495, 2496 and 902) at a point several hundred yards south of the main group. This newly found enclosure is of about the same size as the smallest of the four mentioned above, and has an opening or entrance from the east. The enclosure is completely ploughed out, but visible as soil mark and crop mark from the air. It is almost completely invisible on the ground, but Romano-British sherds were observed nearby by Hope-Taylor in 1950. From within the field boundaries (see HER 979) came a bead-rim sherd of Claudian Patchgrove ware. Nearby was a small patch of Iron Age/Romano-British type iron cinders (See HER 981). Nothing is visible on the ground. See HER 2485 for medieval sherds. Patchgrove ware is usually classified as very Late Iron Age.
