What is the HER?

Surrey’s Historic Environment Record (HER) is the most up-to-date and comprehensive record of known archaeological sites, finds and historic monuments within the current administrative county of Surrey.

The database was originally created using information compiled by the Ordnance Survey Archaeological Division. In 1979 this record was transferred to Surrey County Council. Since then, thousands of new sites and finds have been added and the archive currently contains around 15,000 records.

Formerly known as the Sites and Monuments Record (SMR), we are currently expanding the record to include information relating to all aspects of the historic environment. In particular, we are incorporating information about historic buildings and landscape features, such as parks and gardens. Details of excavations and archaeological surveys are frequently added to the record together with environmental information. Modern archaeological techniques are wide ranging and the record has been expanded into a 'Historic Environment Record' to accommodate this.
