Archaeological Advice from the Heritage Conservation Team
The Heritage Conservation Team of Surrey County Council provides archaeological advice in relation to the planning process of the 11 local authorities in Surrey:
Elmbridge Borough Council
Epsom & Ewell Borough Council
Guildford Borough Council
Mole Valley District Council
Reigate & Banstead Borough Council
Runnymede Borough Council
Spelthorne Borough Council
Surrey Heath Borough Council
Tandridge District Council
Waverley Borough Council
Woking Borough Council
The Heritage Conservation Team hold archaeological records for these local authorities and manages the Historic Environment Record (HER) for the whole of Surrey. The HER forms the basis for all conservation and management advice as well as providing a valuable resource for education and research.
The assistance of the Heritage Conservation Team Planning Archaeology Officers is available to anyone who needs impartial and practical advice on managing, preserving or understanding archaeological remains. For example, it can be of particular help to developers, consultants, planners and landowners. However, anyone (businesses or members of the public) thinking of developing a site is encouraged to discuss the implications with us, and how it might be possible to reduce the threat to the archaeology. We also deal with groundworks that do not need planning permission such as digging trenches for utilities works such as cables or drains.
If you are planning a development, it pays to seek archaeological advice from the Planning Archaeologists at Surrey County Council as early as possible before submitting a planning application. This can save time and money and avoid problems later.
It is the job of the Planning Archaeologists to give advice and to make sure that any necessary work is carried out. The Heritage Conservation Team is not an archaeological contractor, and therefore does not carry out the investigations. For information about other archaeological services provided by Surrey County Council, including the council's archaeological contracting unit, SCAU, please refer to the Surrey Heritage website.
