Types of Assessment Investigation
Desk-based assessment (DBA)
Detailed examination of all known and potential archaeological and historic remains within a specified area. This uses available sources, such as the Surrey Historic Environment Record, historic maps, aerial photographs and documentary sources. The study compiles all available information about a site and enables a decision on the potential archaeological value of a site to be reached.Field evaluation
A survey or trial excavation designed to find out more about the archaeological remains within a proposed development area. Techniques may include fieldwalking, geophysical survey and trial trenching. The results of the evaluation will establish whether further work (often excavation) is required.Excavation
A controlled programme of fieldwork to provide a lasting record of archaeological evidence that will be unavoidably destroyed by development. Archaeological features and finds will be recorded, which will lead to a programme of post-excavation analysis and publication.Watching brief
A formal programme of observation and recording of archaeological evidence coming to light during the course of a development. This will result in the preparation of a report and archive. In all the above cases, the Heritage Conservation Team will monitor the work to ensure that appropriate professional archaeological standards are maintained.
