2009 has seen the Great War pass from living memory into history with the deaths of the last three veterans who served during the conflict. To commemorate their passing, Surrey History Centre has embarked on a project that aims to identify and produce an illustrated biographical database of the 764 individuals so far recorded from the Borough of Woking who gave their lives for King and country during the First World War. Phase 1 of this project opens with a free display entitled 'Woking Remembers' looking at the many varied war memorials to the fallen of the First World War to be found within the boundaries of the modern Borough. From the 548 names recorded on the Woking town centre memorial to the 8 names on the GPO Post Office memorial, the display will take you on a tour of some 30 war memorials throughout the borough and many more plaques and headstones to individual soldiers, sailors and airmen who died during the conflict.
Julian Pooley, Surrey History Centre manager comments: "Interest in the fallen of the First World War has never been higher. The 'Woking Remembers' display is a fascinating and thought-provoking journey through a borough from which 750 of the men (and at least 1 woman), who went to fight for their country never returned. Woking, like many towns both county and nationwide, suffered huge losses during the Great War and it is important to commemorate such a debt. Our military experts have painstakingly researched these memorials so this is a real opportunity for people to discover not only more about them but also their own military ancestors".If you have an ancestor who is featured on one of the Woking Borough memorials, Surrey History Centre would very much like to hear from you. A Flickr site has been set up where anyone can post their own pictures of the memorials and the people commemorated on them.
