A Neolithic enclosure with one or more circular ditches interrupted by numerous causeways. They are found throughout southern and eastern England. The number and location of causewayed enclosures argues against their use as defensive monuments. Instead, they have been interpreted as possible meeting places or ritual centres. The latter interpretation could explain why human remains are sometimes found in the ditches.
