Usually used to describe a hillfort with three or more ditches. Bivallate is the term used for a hillfort with two ditches, univallate for hillforts with just one.

Examples of Iron Age multivallate hillforts in Surrey include 'Caesar's Camp', Farnham and Dry Hill Camp, Lingfield, a large Iron Age Wealden type hillfort of some 24 acres and about 550ft altitude.

Holmbury Camp is a small Iron Age hillfort of bivallate and multivallate type. The defences consist of double ramparts and ditches to the north and west, triple scarping to the south and double scarping to the east.
