Open Hall House

A house with a single storey hall (the main living-room in a medieval house, open to the roof) and domestic ranges of two storeys attached to either one or both ends.

As open hall houses date from the medieval period, those that are known are usually Listed Buildings. In Surrey numerous open hall houses are known, many with original features dating back to the 15th century.
