A large wooden fence, made up of posts often with sharpened ends. Built from the Bronze Age and Iron Age to medieval periods, often to defend settlements from wild animal and human attack. The posts had dug foundations and usually all that remains for archaeologists to find are the foundation trenches.

Palisaded Settlement

An enclosed settlement surrounded by a single or double row of close-set timbers embedded in a foundation trench.

A medieval site excavated at Brooklands, Weybridge, was possibly a small medieval estate enclosed by a ditch and palisade.
