Debitage

The waste flakes and small chips produced when knapping a stone tool. Some flakes have a characteristic appearance, which can indicate the tools that were made or sharpened at the site, even when the tools themselves are absent. Examples of such flakes are Palaeolithic biface trimming flakes and Mesolithic tranchet axe sharpening flakes.
